Settings

Settings is where you configure the app, manage your financial structure, automate imports with smart rules, back up, restore, or reset data, and protect access to Lui Ledger.

How-to

Change language or region

  1. Open Settings, then Preferences.
  2. Under General, choose a Language.
  3. Choose a Region.

Language and region affect how the app is shown and how dates and numbers are formatted.

Create a backup

  1. Open Settings, then Backup & Restore.
  2. Under Backup, choose Create a new backup.
  3. Save the backup file when prompted.

The backup includes financial data, widgets, dashboards, smart rules, and more.

Restore from a backup

  1. Open Settings > Backup & Restore.
  2. Under Restore, choose Restore from file.
  3. Select a Lui Ledger backup file.
  4. Review the backup details, then under Choose what to restore, select the groups you want.
  5. Confirm the restore (you must type RESTORE to continue).

Restoring deletes existing application data and keeps only what you selected from the backup. Make a new backup first if you might need your current data.

Change password

  1. Open Settings, then Security.
  2. Under Change Password, enter Current Password, New Password, and Repeat New Password.
  3. Choose Change Password.

Lock the application

  1. Open Settings > Security.
  2. Under Lock Application, choose Lock.

You will need your password to unlock Lui Ledger again.

Reset application data

  1. Open Settings, then Backup & Restore.
  2. Under Reset, choose Reset application data.
  3. Confirm by typing RESET, then confirm the reset.

This removes all data (financial data, settings, dashboards, smart rules, and more) and returns you to setup. Prefer a backup if you might need the data later.

View version and open source licenses

  1. Open Settings, then About.

The page shows the Lui Ledger version and copyright, then Open Source Licenses. Each listed component has a License text section you can expand. hledger also lists links to its corresponding source code.

Explanation

What Settings is for

Everyday bookkeeping happens on pages like Transactions and Dashboard. Settings is the place for setup that stays in place: how the app looks and formats values, the accounts and commodities your bookkeeping uses, smart rules for imports, copies of your data, and access protection. Use it when you are configuring Lui Ledger rather than recording a single transaction.

Security and encryption

Your ledger holds sensitive personal finance data: balances, accounts, payees, and history. Lui Ledger protects that data so someone with access to your device files still cannot read your bookkeeping without your password.

App data is stored locally and encrypted at rest. Your password unlocks the encryption key that opens the local data. While the app is locked, that key is not available, so the stored data stays unreadable. Unlocking with the correct password opens the data again for normal use. You can also use Lock Application under Security when you step away.

Because everything runs locally and offline, your financial records do not need to sit on a remote server to use Lui Ledger day to day. That keeps control of the data on your machine: no cloud account is required, and encryption protects the files where they live.

The flip side of local encryption is that the password cannot be recovered. Lui Ledger does not keep a copy of your password that could be emailed or reset for you. If you forget it, you cannot decrypt the existing data. You can start fresh by deleting the application data, or restore from a backup if you have one and still know the password that protects your access.

Store your app password somewhere safe (for example a password manager). You can change it later under Settings > Security, but only if you still know the current password.
