Import

Import brings many transactions into Lui Ledger from a file. You pick an import source, choose options for that run (including smart rule groups when the source offers them), review the results, then verify and import them into your ledger.

Tutorial

Import your first batch

  1. Open Import. From Transactions, choose Add transaction, then Batch import.
  2. If you have no sources yet, choose Add Source. Pick a source type, set a Title and any source settings, then choose Add.
  3. Select the source tile, then choose Next.
  4. On Select Options, set the options for this run (for example the file to import, and Smart rule groups if shown), then choose Next.
  5. On Review, open any transaction that needs fixing. Assign the missing account, check amounts and commodities, then save.
  6. Choose Verify. When the status shows Verified, choose Import.

You land on Transactions with the new entries in your ledger.

How-to

Add an import source

  1. Open Import.
  2. Choose Add Source.
  3. Select the source type you want (for example Generic CSV Import or ABN AMRO Bank File Import).
  4. Enter a Title and fill in the source settings for that type.
  5. Choose Add.

The new source appears on Select Source so you can use it for imports. See the Import Sources section for every source's settings.

Configure or delete an import source

  1. On Select Source, open the menu on a source tile.
  2. Choose Configuration to change the Title or source settings, then Save.
  3. Or choose Delete Source, then confirm with Delete.

Configuration is for defaults that stay with the source. Each import still has its own Select Options step for that run.

Run a batch import

  1. Open Import (or Transactions > Add transaction > Batch import).
  2. Select a source, then Next.
  3. On Select Options, review and adjust the options for this import, then Next.
  4. On Review, check the list. Edit or remove rows that are wrong.
  5. Choose Verify, then Import.

Edit or remove a transaction before importing

  1. On Review, select a transaction card.
  2. Change the fields or postings as needed, then Save. Or choose Delete to drop that row from this import.
  3. After you change a saved import transaction, choose Verify again before Import.

Saving rejects an unbalanced transaction the same way as on Transactions. Fix the From and To sides so they balance, then save again.

Continue later and resume

  1. On Review, choose Continue Later.
  2. Use the rest of the app as needed (for example add an account, adjust smart rules, or check existing transactions).
  3. Open Import again. Lui Ledger returns you to Review with the same saved import transactions still there.
  4. Finish editing, then Verify and Import.

Cancel an import in progress

  1. On Review, choose Cancel.
  2. Confirm with Cancel & Discard Changes, or choose Continue Importing to keep the saved import transactions.

Cancel clears the current import. Those rows are not added to your ledger.

Import steps

Import uses three steps:

StepWhat you do
Select SourcePick which import source to use, or add a new one
Select OptionsSet options for this run (file, accounts, Smart rule groups, and so on)
ReviewCheck, edit, verify, then import the prepared transactions

Common actions:

  • Next / Previous - Move between steps.
  • Add Source - Open Add Import Source (on Select Source).
  • Continue Later - Leave Import without discarding the saved import transactions.
  • Cancel - Discard the current import after confirmation.
  • Verify - Check that the import can be applied to your ledger.
  • Import - Write the verified transactions into your ledger (shown after a successful verify).
  • Done - Leave Review when there are no import transactions left to process.

Import sources

An import source is a reusable connector that turns a file (or similar input) into candidate transactions. Built-in examples include Generic CSV Import and ABN AMRO Bank File Import. Exact settings and options depend on the source type; see the Import Sources section.

  • Add Source / Add Import Source - Choose a source type, set Title and initial settings, then Add.
  • Configuration - Edit the source Title and its saved settings (Configurations drawer, Save).
  • Delete Source - Remove the source after confirmation.

Source settings are defaults for that source. Select Options is where you choose what to import on a given run. Many sources include Smart rule groups so you can apply smart rules before Review.

Review list

  • Review amounts, balances, and assigned accounts before finalizing.
  • A warning appears when some dates overlap with transactions already in your ledger (possible duplicates).
  • The list uses the same card layout as Transactions. Opening a card edits a saved import transaction, not a ledger entry yet.
  • Edits and deletes on Review update only this import until you choose Import.

Verification and import checks

Verify (and Import) check the prepared transactions against your existing ledger before anything is written permanently.

  • Postings in each transaction must balance. If they do not, the check fails and the import does not complete.
  • Saving an individual import transaction also requires balanced postings.
  • Other problems can block verify as well: an account or commodity that does not exist, or a failed balance assertion.

After a successful verify, the status shows Verified and Import becomes available. Changing a transaction on Review clears that verified state, so you verify again.

Explanation

Saved import transactions

When you leave Select Options, Lui Ledger saves the prepared transactions for this import. They are not in your ledger yet. They stay available so you can leave Import with Continue Later, work elsewhere in the app, then come back and keep editing until the list is correct.

That matters because imports often need missing accounts, better descriptions, or smart rules adjusted before the numbers are ready. You fix the candidates first; only then do you verify and import.

Cancel discards those saved rows. Import moves them into your real transactions list and clears the import draft.

Why balancing matters on import

Lui Ledger uses double-entry bookkeeping: every transaction's postings must balance so money does not appear or disappear. Import applies the same rule.

If a prepared transaction is unbalanced, verify and import fail. That can feel strict when you are cleaning up a bank file, but it is intentional. It stops incomplete or mistyped rows from entering the ledger and breaking totals. Fix the From and To sides (and commodities) on Review until each row balances, then verify again.

For how balanced postings work day to day, see Transactions.

Import sources and smart rules

An import source reads your file and builds candidate transactions (often with the bank side filled in and the other side still unassigned). On Select Options, choosing Smart rule groups runs those smart rules before Review, so matching rows can already have the right account, commodity, or tags.

Smart rules do not replace Review. They reduce manual edits. You still check the list, fix what rules did not cover, verify, and import.
